Your electrical panel is the heart of your home's electrical system. It sends power to every room and helps protect your circuits from overloads.
As homes use more electricity than ever before, older panels may no longer keep up. If you are planning home improvements or adding new appliances, you may need to upgrade your electrical panel. Knowing what affects the cost can help you plan your project with confidence.

An electrical panel is the main control point for your home's electricity. It receives power from the electrical supply and sends it to different circuits throughout the house.
The panel also contains circuit breakers that help protect your home if too much electricity flows through a circuit. These safety devices reduce the risk of electrical faults and fire hazards.
Many older homes were built before today's electrical demands. Modern households use more power for heating, cooking, entertainment, and technology.
You may need an upgrade if you notice:
Upgrading your electrical panel helps improve safety and gives your home the power it needs.
Several factors can affect the cost to upgrade your panel.
These include:
Some homes only need a simple panel replacement. Others may require new wiring or upgrades to meet current building codes. Every home is different so the total cost will vary.
Many older homes still use a 100-amp panel. While this may be enough for smaller households, modern homes often require more electrical capacity.
A panel upgrade to 200 amps may be recommended if you plan to install:
A larger panel gives you more flexibility for future electrical upgrades and helps prevent overloaded circuits.
Electrical panel upgrades involve more than replacing the panel itself.
The work may include:
Some homes may also require service upgrades if the existing electrical supply cannot support the new panel.
Sometimes homeowners only need targeted improvements instead of replacing the entire system.
For example, an electrician may recommend:
A professional inspection can help determine whether a full panel replacement or a smaller upgrade is the better option.

A new electrical panel offers several advantages.
It can help:
Many homeowners also enjoy greater peace of mind knowing their electrical system is safer and more reliable.
While every property is different, an upgraded electrical panel can make a home more attractive to future buyers.
Buyers often prefer homes with modern electrical systems because they are safer and better suited for today's electrical needs. An upgraded panel may also reduce the need for future electrical improvements after the property is sold.
Upgrading your electrical panel is not a DIY project. The work involves your home's main electrical supply and must meet current safety standards. A licensed electrician can safely upgrade an electrical panel and make sure it operates correctly.
A registered electrician can also identify problems before work begins and recommend the right solution for your home. When comparing electrician rates, NZ homeowners should consider experience and workmanship, not just price. If your panel develops a serious fault, an emergency electrician can restore safe power quickly.
The cost to upgrade an electrical panel depends on your home's electrical system, the size of the panel, and the work needed to complete the project. Every home is different, so a professional assessment is the best way to understand your options.
If your panel is old or struggling to support modern appliances, upgrading can improve safety, increase electrical capacity, and prepare your home for future electrical needs.
A modern electrical panel helps keep your home safe and ready for today's electrical demands. Professional advice can help you choose the right upgrade for your property.
