It can be confusing when you plug something into an outlet, and only one side works. Many homeowners experience this issue and wonder why it happens. When half of an outlet is not working, it usually means there is a specific electrical setup or a minor problem in the system.
Understanding the cause can help you decide whether it is a simple fix or something that needs professional help. In some cases, the issue is normal. In others, it may point to deeper wiring issues that need attention.

There are several common reasons why only one side of an outlet works. Identifying the cause can help you fix the problem safely.
One of the most common reasons is that the outlet is controlled by a wall switch. In many homes, one half of the outlet is connected to a switch, while the other half stays powered on all the time. This setup is often used for lamps.
If one side is not working, try turning nearby switches on and off. You may find that the outlet works when the switch is turned on.

A tripped circuit breaker in your breaker panel can also cause outlets to stop working. Sometimes, only part of a circuit is affected, especially if the wiring splits power between outlets.
Check your breaker panel and look for a breaker that is in the middle or OFF position. Resetting it may restore power to the outlet.
A GFCI outlet is designed to protect against electrical shock. When it detects a problem, it shuts off power.
If a GFCI outlet trips, it may stop power to other electrical outlets on the same circuit.
To fix this:

Loose wiring is another common cause of a partially working outlet. Over time, wires inside the outlet can loosen due to wear or movement. When this happens, only part of the outlet may receive power.
Signs of wiring problems include:
These wiring issues should be handled carefully, as they may pose safety risks.
Sometimes the problem is the outlet itself. Old or damaged electrical outlets can stop working properly. Internal components may wear out over time, causing one side to fail.
In these cases, replacing the outlet may solve the problem. However, this should be done carefully to avoid electrical hazards.

Sometimes the problem is not limited to one outlet.
If several electrical outlets are affected, the issue may be deeper in the circuit. This could involve wiring connections between outlets or problems in the breaker panel.
When multiple outlets are not working correctly, it is best to have the system checked.
Some outlet problems are simple, but others require professional help.
You should contact a registered electrician or residential electrician if:
For urgent issues, such as signs of overheating or electrical damage, an emergency electrician should inspect the system immediately.
If half of an outlet is not working, the cause is often simple, such as a switched outlet or a tripped GFCI outlet. However, it can also be a sign of wiring issues or a damaged outlet.
Understanding the cause can help you decide the next step. While some fixes are simple, electrical problems should always be handled with care. If the issue continues or seems unsafe, it is best to have a professional inspect your electrical outlets and wiring.
If you have electrical outlets that are not working properly, a professional inspection can help find the cause and fix the issue safely. Proper repairs help prevent further wiring issues and ensure your system works as it should.
